What is a Surgical Facelift?
It is a surgical procedure to tighten the facial skin by ‘lifting it upwards and backwards’. It involves removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles and redraping of the skin.
A surgical facelift counteracts the signs of aging produced by gravity. The result is a firmer and younger looking face.
Who can undergo a Surgical Facelift?
Men and women whose skin have begun to sag but whose skin still has some elasticity and whose bone structure are strong and well-define. Most patients who are in the forties and above. Individuals who have uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood clotting problems or the tendency to form excessive scars may need to consult the surgeon before considering surgical facelift.
How long is the procedure?
Several hours or longer.
After the procedure:
- Rest is recommended 3 to 4 days after the surgery
- Your head will be wrapped firmly with bandages to reduce swelling and bruising.
- Elevate your head, neck and back for a few days after surgery to reduce swelling.
- Avoid any strenuous activity including sexual intercourse and heavy lifting for the first 2 weeks.
- Avoid alcohol, saunas and steam baths for several weeks.
- Limit your exposure to the sun
Are there any side effects?
All surgeries carry some form of risk and complications may develop. Some include:
- Hematoma, a collection of blood under the skin that can only be removed by the surgeon.
- Injury to the nerves that control facial muscles (temporary).
- Infection.
- Numbness of the skin which will dissipate after a few weeks.
- The face will look bruised and puffy but rest assure that these are only temporary.
How soon can I expect to see the effects?
Optimal results can be seen in 3 weeks.
